Offworlders (those not native to Pern) come from a wide variety of planets, satellites, and space stations. Some people spend their entire lives in space, living and dying without ever having set foot on a planet. They are as varied as the places they originate from. Players have the fewest limitations when playing an offworlder, as they can literally be anything, even based from another series by Anne McCaffery, as all of her science fiction books are interrelated (most notably through the Federation and a brainship (The Ship Who books) appearing in the Killishandra books). In this thread, brief summaries of other series will be given, for your convenience, as well as what the Federation is. Though beware, these include spoilers.

Federal Sentient Planets: (FSP, or Federation) The Federation is the organization that oversees all human activity. The FSP is made up of a council of the wealthiest humans in space, and are characterized by being impersonal and doing nothing that is not for their own gain. They are required to assist in emergencies, but lever payments that "last to the fourth generation" of a planet, they are so hefty. Only one council member has ever been portrayed as selfless and trustworthy, Lady Marmion, who appears in the Petaybe novels, going so far as to run a school on her space station for underprivileged children.

Brainship: Also called the Ship Who books. The stories of this series deal with the various adventures of 'shellpersons'—people who as young children or infants have had to be hardwired into a life support system, with sensory input and motor nerves tied into a computer aboard either a 'Brainship' or space station. They serve as starship pilots or colony administrators while paying off their massive debt for education and hardware—and then in whatever capacity they choose, as free agents. As they literally ARE the ship or space station in which they are encased, they typically have a human partner called a Brawn. Brains, due to the modifications they have undergone, do not age, in essence, becoming immortal, and go through many Brawns in their lifetime.

Crystal Singer: revolves around the planet Ballybran. Under a permanent biohazard travel restriction, Ballybran is home to one of the FSP's wealthiest, yet most reclusive organizations—the Heptite Guild. Source of invaluable crystals vital to various industries, the Heptite Guild is known to require absolute, perfect pitch in hearing and voice for all applicants, especially those seeking to mine crystal by song.

Petaybe: When the FSP certified the little iceball of a planet called Petaybe for colonization, they had no idea that the planet was alive and making modifications to those who settled there. As the FSP was planning to mine the population for soldiers and menial workers, they were NOT pleased to learn that part of the modifications were an inability to leave the planet after a certain age. These are the books from which Marmion hails.
