Agenothree: HNO3, a common chemical on Pern, used to kill Thread after it has burrowed into the ground. Used in flamethrowers.

Ancients: a name for the first colonists (settlers) who came to Pern. They had technology that was far superior to what Pern had by the time of the Ninth Pass.
Apprentice: the lowest student rank in any craft. There are junior and senior apprentices. The lower rank will usually be designated with the word apprentice only.
Beasthold: Pernese equivalent of a farm where animals are raised or kept, also a name for stables.
Belior and Timor: The two moons of Pern. Belior is larger and higher than Timor
Between: an area of nothingness and sensory deprivation between here and there. Described as colder even than space.
Black diamonds: also called Istan diamonds for the place they are mined.
Black dust: a name for Thread made harmless by cold (freezing) weather. Frozen Thread appears like black dust when it comes apart in the air.
Black heavy-water: analogous to Terran oil.

Blood, the: another name for a Lord Holder's family; e.g. "he is a member of the Blood" or "she is belonging to the Blood", meaning he or she is a member of the current Lord Holder's family or Bloodline.
Boron: Pern is rich in boron, whereas earth is carbon-rich, meaning adaptations had to be made by the original colonists.
Bubbly pie: A popular (and tasty) treat
Charter: The document made by the original colonists that details the Laws, rules, and punishments, as well as the basic rights of the people. (essentially a Pernese Bill of Rights)
Conclave: meeting of all major Lord Holders, usually held to decide a new Lord Holder or decide major Holder issues.
Cothold: a small piece of land, usually used by only one family that lives in the actual hold (living quarters). Also the name of the buildings (the Hold proper) that are part of a cothold. Often called simply a cot.
Council: a meeting of leaders: all major Holders, Weyrleaders, and Craftleaders or their representatives. The council probably was the precursor of the Conclave, the name for a council of Lord Holders held in later times (in which Weyrleaders and Craftmasters did not participate).
Fall: Threadfall. A Fall can be either dead or live. A dead Fall does not bring live thread to Pern's surface, a live one does. If a Fall is dead or live Fall depends on the weather conditions, mainly the ambient temperature and precipitation, at the time of the Fall. A Fall can have different flows and can manifest itself on various places at the same time (e.g.: the second and third Fall of the Second Pass were on the same day but in Fort and High Reaches territories)
Fellis: A sedative drug made from the fellis plant. Taken by mixing with wine(typically) or otherwise mixed with food or drink. Never taken straight.
Firestone: a phosphine-bearing mineral which dragons chew to produce flame.
Glowbasket: a basket that holds glows. It can be carried as well as put in a (wall mounted) fixture. Glowbaskets can always be closed.
Goal ball: Pernese basketball.
